The new regulations will require all restaurant staff to undergo training in order to protect their guests with food allergies. This will increase awareness among the staff about how to deal with guest that have food allergies. This will help significantly reduce the amount of mistaken food allergies thus keeping customers (at least the ones with food allergies) safer. The new regulations also require to post potential food allergies on menus as well as ask guests to inform the staff of any food allergies they may have.
This is a great idea, I don't know if you guys have ever heard the horror story about the two sisters that ate at a restaurant on Thayer street. One of them had asked the waitress for a bowl of chili and had informed her plenty of time that she was deadly allergic to peanuts. It just so happened that this restaurant thickened their chili with peanut butter, and the waitress didn't quite put two and two together. End all, the sister ate the chili and ended up dying. This incident could have been avoided if the staff were trained properly about food allergies. I think the new regulations in Mass will set a standard across the United States.
I have heard about the girl dying on thayer. I thought it was just an urban legend though. Anyways i think that all states should put a law like this into effect. It protects the restaurants as well as the guests with allergies. Our wait staff at my job knows the menu very well and can answer any allergy questions. They do have the advantage of half of them going to culinary school, but none the less they are very knowledgeable about food allergies, so it protects our hotel against lawsuits.
ReplyDeleteI also heard about that. I also have a few horror stories of my own when I was working over the summer. Johnson & Wales hosts a career exploration program for high school students over the summer. We had more than a few kids with allergies not some forward with them and through no fault of there own were rushed to the hospital. I think that it is up to the staff overall to be on top of food allergies because with the amount of them out there today it is a big concern so this is a great idea. However, there is a line where things are out of the establishments hands and on the guests side of the table to make sure that any allergies are made clear to the staff.
